ABSTRACT

Introduction: Biomedical waste (BMW) generated in healthcare facilities poses significant health hazards due to improper management. Lack of awareness, inadequate financial and human resources, and poor waste disposal practices exacerbate these risks. In developing countries like Pakistan, knowledge gaps among healthcare professionals regarding waste management are prevalent, contributing to unsafe disposal practices.

Objective: This study aims to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practices of healthcare professionals at Shahida Islam Medical Complex, Lodhran, concerning hospital waste management (HWM).

Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted between April and June 2023 at Shahida Islam Medical Complex, Lodhran. A total of 160 healthcare professionals (40 doctors, 40 nurses, 40 lab technicians, and 40 class IV employees) participated. Data was collected using a pre-designed, pre-tested questionnaire covering knowledge about BMW generation, hazards, legislation, and management practices. Inclusion criteria consisted of newly enrolled house officers, nurses, grade IV employees, and lab technicians, while senior doctors and medical officers were excluded.

Results: The study found that 55% of doctors, 95% of nurses, and 62.5% of class IV employees had good knowledge about BMW management. However, 45% of respondents believed that safe management posed an extra burden on hospital resources. Only 42.5% of doctors and 37.5% of nurses were aware of color coding for waste segregation. Additionally, 77.5% of class IV employees had experienced needle stick injuries, highlighting gaps in safety protocols.

Conclusion: There is a significant lack of knowledge and adherence to proper BMW management practices among healthcare professionals, which necessitates enhanced training, monitoring, and implementation of safety protocols.
